Channeling Demystified
As we explain in our self-directed training course called, “Channeling Demystified”, the term “channeling” is one of the most confusing terms used in this industry. The term is confusing because the same word is used to mean different things—all are similar—but very different nonetheless.
Channeling Spirit Definitions
Generally, you will find that individuals use the term “channeling” 1) as a synonym for “Spirit communication” (also known as mediumship) which is the practice of consciously translating information from any Spirit (e.g., dead people / animals, angels, spirit guides, etc.) using “the Clairs”, or 2) to mean “trance channeling” which is the practice of using an altered state of consciousness or a deep meditative state to allow Spirit to communicate directly (without translation) to a third party or audience using a channel’s physical body, or 3) to refer only to angelic or higher level entity communication—either in a conscious manner or a trance state.
Our Definition of Channeling
For us, “channeling” is synonymous with “trance channeling”. The channel is generally not consciously aware of or in control of the words and actions of Spirit during a trance channeling session. Spirit will use the channel’s voice and body to communicate. The channel’s voice and body may take on characteristics of Spirit including voice intonation, dialect, mannerisms, vernacular, and sometimes even muscle tone and physical attributes (e.g., facial tic).
CONSCIOUS Channeling = Mediumship
Although inelegant, if you want to use the term “channeling” as a synonym for mediumship, one way to clarify to your audience your intent is to instead use the phrase “conscious channeling”. Unlike trance channeling where the channel is not actively translating and participating in the communication from Spirit, mediumship requires active translation and explanation of the information that is presented from Spirit.
Channeling Awareness
To summarize, using these definitions, the biggest distinction across the spectrum is that conscious channeling means you are actively aware of Spirit and your role is to translate the information communicated from Spirit. Whereas, when you are a vessel for trance channeling, you allow Spirit to communicate using your body, without interference or translation. Conscious channels (aka mediums) are more common than trance channels, although, like Kent, many mediums also trance channel.
Angelic or Higher Level Beings
The third use of channeling—to refer to communication only with angelic or higher level entities—is somewhat of a blend of the definitions I’ve outlined above for conscious and trance channeling, as this communication can be conducted either through translation like mediumship or through trance.
Personal Channeling Definition
Although the purpose of this post is to clarify a term that I feel is very confusing—especially for people who are new to this work—I truly don’t care what term you use. As long as you’re clear regarding what you mean and what others mean by “channeling” so you are able to communicate effectively, it really doesn’t matter what you choose to call the work. However, when you are seeking to hire a professional to communicate with Spirit, it is important that you clarify this term, so you understand the service that is offered.
